5 self-makeup mistakes (and how to avoid them)

Self-makeup · by PUCCA diana · 5 min read

Most self-makeup problems don't come from a lack of expensive products, but from a few missed steps. Here are the five mistakes I see most often in my clients and a concrete fix for each.

1. The wrong foundation

The most common mistake is a shade or texture meant for different skin. A foundation that's too light looks like a mask, while one that's too dry emphasizes fine lines. The fix: test the shade along your jawline, in natural light. It should disappear into the skin, not leave a line.

2. Too much product

A heavy hand is the enemy of natural makeup. Too much foundation, too much powder, too much blush settles into fine lines and ages the face. The fix: build in thin layers. It's easier to add more than to take away.

Good makeup feels light on the skin. If you can feel it, it's probably too much.

3. Forced brows

Brows drawn too intensely or too dark completely change your expression and look unnatural. The fix: choose a shade one tone lighter than your hair roots and fill only the gaps, with short, hair-like strokes.

4. Skipping skin prep

Makeup applied to unprepared skin doesn't last and doesn't look smooth. The fix: cleanse, moisturize and let the cream absorb before foundation. Prepped skin keeps makeup fresh for hours longer.

5. No setting

Many clients skip the last step and wonder why their makeup fades by noon. The fix: set with powder in the areas that get shiny and, if needed, with a setting spray. It's the step that keeps everything in place.

The good news

All five can be learned. In my self-makeup course we work step by step, on your own products and for your own face, until you can do it yourself at home, whenever you need to.
